Two sixth-graders with shaved heads were climbing the wall to retrieve a foam ball that a spirited shot had sent to the other side. Not a sound came from over there, as if there were nothing beyond, as if the world existed only here. The principal called me from his office where it opened onto the courtyard.

“Our friend Dico has written you some gibberish.”

Taking the paper folded in quarters, I affected the easygoing cowboy.

“More Chateaubriand prose, I suppose?”

He laughed hard, then took an ironical tone.

“Every last word!”

The ball wasn’t going to come back. It had taken off into infinite space. When I pushed open the blue door, Mohammed the monitor spun sharply about on his chair, as if caught in some act.

“Hello.”

“Hello.”

He turned back around and went on surfing on a mobile telephone site. I waited till I got upstairs to unfold the paper.

Monsieur, I apologize for talking back to you in front of the 9-A class and especially for being so insolent to a teacher who has always been kind to me. I conclude by telling you that I promise to try to do better toward the teachers. Dico
