Chapter Four Volunteering

Kalbum had broken the simple rule that had served him well in the army. He was kicking himself as it was all for just a pretty smile.

As he walked forward from the ranks of his man, sniggering men, toward the city-god, he thought. Just because that beautiful woman in a black dress smiled so sweetly at me, that was no reason for me to volunteer. All these years, I’ve managed to keep under the radar by just not volunteering for anything. Now I just had to go and break my winning streak. Only idiot’s volunteer!

When he reached the city-god that was standing under a large stretched canvas that covered some tables, he bowed deeply. He had only seen the city-god from a distance, and then he was in his dragon form. Kalbum looked the god up and down and just saw an ordinary man with armor and a great ax on his back. Sure, he was what women would call ruggedly handsome, but golden light was not shining from his body. At the moment, the god just looked annoyed as several people were talking to him simultaneously.

The elegant, beautiful woman who had gotten Kalbum to volunteer moved to the god side. She put up her hand and instructed in a commanding voice to the assembled companions of the god, “Enough talking and guessing. Let's just solve the problem by trying at least.”

This got some grunts of support and a few skeptical shakes of people’s heads. The woman just smiled as she acknowledged the feedback. Then she advised, “Captain Kalbum has offered his services to be the first to be… what did we call it… oh enhanced. Let us just do it and see if it works.”

A woman with a bow on her back commented, “We know the process works. The problem is if Ahava's power will drain into the pyramid. It is almost full at the moment, and as the princess says, the shrine will be fully operational if more power flows in.”

Surprisingly, the god that they were calling Ahava spoke like a normal human being. Kalbum listened as he explained, “I'm pretty sure that power inside a person cannot be sucked into the pyramid, and as long as I keep the use of my powers outside the compound, we will be fine.”

To Kalbum's shock, a large warrior laughed at the proclamation from the god. Then the man had the gall to say, “Tonight has not been full of brilliant choices so far.”

To the captain's surprise, the god just accepted the criticism as he nodded his head at the large warrior. Then he chortled with what must have been a joke, “When you're on a roll, it's best to keep going. We need to deal with this tonight, and I think that Semiramis is right; we just need to try.”

Kalbum noticed that the conversation continued until it seemed that everybody was convinced of the plan. He was bemused with the fact there was a city-god that listened to mere mortals.
