Chapter Six - City Tasks

Ahava was lying restlessly on his impromptu rough bed. Even though he had gotten some sleep, he was both mentally and physically exhausted. It had been well after sunrise that he had finished the patrol of the city with Ningal. Now he was back in human form. This decision to revert to his human shape had disappointed Ningal significantly. When she had changed back to being human, she had stomped off to find a place to sleep.

The night of patrolling had been emotionally draining. This feeling of being drained seemed mostly due as the rest of the night had been full of similar experiences to his situation with the minor noble family.

He was at his wit's end. All through the night, he had to make judgments on what to do in complicated situations. When he was in doubt about what was happening, he tried to deflate the situation. This was normally done by adding defenses to the houses being attacked. In addition, he had sent many gangs of attackers through the portals to be imprisoned for now. As there was no room in this city, the prisoners had been sent to Bad-tibira. Where they were being held and interrogated.

The restlessness was due to the thought about all the problems piling up. With him trying to rule a city, he knew he would get a headache if he thought about it too much.

With wide unfocused eyes, he stared at the arch ceiling of a randomly picked room in the palace's living quarters. There was so much space in the royal apartments that he was easily able to get some privacy.

Sighing, he thought that never in his previous life had he ever considered that he would be in this strange type of situation. He had to take on all this responsibility of ruling numerous city-states. Still, it seemed to be falling into his lap at the moment. Ahava was determined to try and do this well, as many lives were reliant on him now.

I need more help, he thought desperately. Sure, I can just use force to rule by edict, but that is not how I want this city to be governed. If I am going to have this city ruled justly, then I need to get help.

Not able to get back to sleep, Ahava turned his head to look around the room. The only piece of furniture in the bare room was the mattress he was laying on and its coverings. The rest of the room was just starkly empty. It would have been more comfortable for him to stay in an inn, but nothing was available, and it would be difficult to arrange.

Knowing that he was not going to be able to get back to sleep, he slowly got up out of bed. Standing up, he felt that after his time of being in a dragon’s form, his human body certainly lacked abilities. With his powerful muscular arms reaching to the ceiling, he stretched, feeling the muscle knots being released.
