âWhat are you doing here?â Hopeâs heart was racing. âPut down that knife.â
âYou got to help me,â Conair replied.
âNo one can help you as long as youâre holding my daughter at knifepoint. If you want anything at all, you have to let her go.â Hope tried not to panic.
âI let her go, and you donât do anything for me. Iâm no idiot. Iâve been around the cops before. I ainât gonna hurt her ⦠not if I donât have to.â
âYouâre being stupid, Conair. Thatâs your name, right? You know youâre already in trouble. Donât make things worse.â
âListen to me.â Conair waved the knife. âListen to me. I got to tell you that I had nothinâ to do with Laurenâs going. That wasnât on me.â
âI donât care.â Hopeâs voice was firm. âWe canât talk as long as youâre threatening my daughter.â
âYou got to listen to me! The police talk to you.â
âNo one will talk to me or you, unless you drop that knife.â
As Conair looked around the room, Hope spotted the desperation in his eyes. He was cornered, and he wasnât smart enough to figure his way out.
Bijou ran into the kitchen, arched her back, and hissed at the man.
âLook at me,â Hope said. âLook at me. Letâs stay calm and figure out how weâre going to get what we want. You want to tell me your story, and, believe me, I want to hear it. But, youâre holding my daughter. I donât hear so well when sheâs in danger. Thatâs simple parenting. Iâll tell you what. You let her go, just let her sit at the table, and Iâll listen. I promise.â
Conair frowned before he sat Cori in a chair. He didnât put down the knife, but it was no longer close to her throat.
âYou better not be messinâ with me,â he said. âI donât like being messed with.â
âNo one is messing with you.â Hope moved close to the stove where there was a skillet she hadnât yet used. âNow, start at the beginning. What are you to Lauren?â
âI ainât nothinâ. Thatâs just it. Sheâs pretty and all, but she never paid no mind to me. Iâm not stupid. I know when a gal is lookinâ down on me.â
âWhat did you fight about?â
âDrugs, booze, the usual.â
Hope drummed her fingers close to the skillet handle. âWas she stealing from you? Was that it?â
âNo, no, you got it all wrong.â
âRuffian!â
Conair turned to the voice and found Max standing a few feet away. Surprise filled Conairâs face.
âWhat theâ¦?â
That was all the distraction Hope needed. She grabbed the skillet and swung it hard against Conairâs head.
But not hard enough.
Conair staggered, but he did not go down. Blood ran down his cheek, as he turned to Hope. He raised the knife and stepped toward her.
He didnât make it.
When Cori stuck out her foot, Conair tripped and fell to the floor, and Bijou jumped on the man and repeatedly bit him. That gave Hope time enough for a second blow with the skillet, and that did the trick.
