When updating your theme, remember the importance of purchasing enough ornaments in your new theme or style to allow the eye to connect the elements and create a sense of unity. Purchasing three ornaments in a variety of styles will not be enough to make a real impact, and you will feel disappointed with the end result. If you are dividing out your tree budget over a few years, I recommend investing in several of one ornament every year instead of purchasing ornaments at random. Once you have firmly established your theme or style, you can begin to add in one ornament at a time.

If you have a lot of leftover ornaments that you did not utilize on your new tree, think about where you could place a minitree in your home. Small trees add such personality to a kitchen, guest room, or master bedroom and are great places to utilize your extra ornaments. Extra ornaments can also be used to decorate wreaths and mantle garlands or tucked into centerpieces and tabletop displays, so there is no need to let your extra ornaments go to waste!

The final thing we are going to cover when it comes to ornaments is the actual hanging device. Unless you have a nonbreakable or fabric ornament, do not hang it with the gold thread that comes with most ornaments! It is not a reliable hanging mechanism, and I have seen too many beautiful ornaments broken because the thread broke or the knot came loose!

I often invest in the decorative packs of ornament hooks with the small hook on one end and the swirled end on the other. Attach these hooks to the actual top of the ornament and they will give you more insurance against falls. If you have a real tree, I recommend wiring breakable or heavy ornaments to the branches with floral wire or brown pipe cleaners to protect them as the branches start to droop.

Now that we have finally covered all of the ins and outs of ornaments for your tree, take some time to look over which ornaments you currently have and what you need to add to complete your look. Log this information into your Custom Christmas Tree-Decorating Checklist so you have a record, and remember to shop early for best selection! In the next chapter, we are going to cover one of the most overlooked parts of the tree—the topper!
