CHAPTER thirteen

Even an open book needs to be read to be appreciated.

—Richelle Bach’s Diary

On the drive home the streets were nearly deserted, the way the Salt Lake roads always are in a heavy snowfall. I passed two police cars, a UPS truck, and a fleet of snowplows. The only ones out were those who had to be.

As I pulled up my street I could see, in the light of a streetlamp, the silhouette of someone in my driveway shoveling snow. It was Justin, of course. I should have been grateful, but in the state I was in I just felt more upset.

He looked up at me and waved, then stepped out of the driveway so I could drive in. I pulled my car into the garage.

He walked over to me as I got out of my car. I tried to act normal. “You look like a snowman,” I said.

“It’s been snowing.”

“Yeah, I noticed. Thank you for shoveling my drive.”

“My pleasure. How was work?”

“It was okay,” I lied. I unlocked the side door to my house, then stepped inside. Justin brushed the snow off his shoulders, kicked the snow from his boots, and followed me in.

“I still need to do your front walk,” he said, closing the door behind him.

“It’s okay. No one ever uses it, except solicitors.”

“Yeah, I saw your sign.”

I had posted a handwritten sign on my door that read:

No Solicitors. Really.

Let’s not make this awkward.
