She turned to Riga to discuss it, but her friend’s eyes were shut. She’d show it to her tomorrow.

After helping Riga get ready for bed, Edie left, looking up and down the street as she hurried back to her house. She was under surveillance, she was sure of it. R.I.P. knew not to deliver to Edie’s house while she and Riga were there. Riga had said the twitchy-curtained WhatsApp group hadn’t seen who had made the first delivery, but Edie couldn’t help wondering if anybody had.

The door to the dining room was still open when she got home. She closed it, yet still felt like she was inside. Maybe she shouldn’t have followed her instincts to enter. Now she’d woken up the ghosts. So many memories repeated on her. She’d had a chilblain, once. Sky had knelt at Edie’s feet on the rug in front of the drawing room fire and applied witch-hazelled cotton balls to her toes.

She looked again at the Christmas card. What did Sean look up to?

He always glanced up to the sky.
