Chapter 13. Asgard

Attention! You broke the Rules and left the Quest Zone!

Attention! You have received the punishment Increasing Pain!

Attention! You have received the status of Deserter!

Return to the Quest Zone!

DEJA VU. ONCE AGAIN, my appearance here was a direct consequence of defeat. And, just like last time, it was accompanied by considerable losses among the personnel. Still, the sacrifice was not in vain and would save many more lives. Hundreds, even thousands.

As for introspection, I had learned long ago to set my emotions aside in a critical situation. Otherwise, I would have died in the first mission. I was getting better at controlling my emotions, becoming less and less reliant on emotional crutches like the Calculating Mind. No matter which way one looked at it, extreme rationality was quite restrictive.

Remaining (Pain Control): 4 minutes and 59 seconds.

I had very little time, but perhaps I could complete what I’d planned. I knelt down by the Minor Altar and placed my hand on it.

Syncing completed.

Remaining (Pain Control): 4 minutes and 46 seconds.

The process didn’t take as long as last time. From what I understood of the mechanism, memory was the first thing to be copied. The “clone” was unlikely to inherit the damage to the dantian. Even if I was wrong, my injuries no longer posed a serious threat. A week’s vacation and the “clone” would be as good as new. Too bad I didn’t even have a day.

Level: 27 (410/540).

Too many points, actually, increasing the risk of going up a level. There was no point in buying any skill, so…

Would you like to transfer the System Points to the Minor Altar (Heresy of Cain)?

Yes/No

Enter number: 105/10,000 SP

Remaining: 305/540.

I could get the experience points back in the future, so it served as a kind of reserve. What’s left was enough for everything I’d planned. Okay, moving on.

Activate the Voice of the Overlord (1 SP):

Uli, I’m in the Dungeon. I’m leaving behind a man and some of the loot.

MR: 9,354/10,000.

Having sent the message, I placed the Goblin Caves (C) card into a prepared Bottomless Bag (F). I wouldn’t be able to access some of the Dungeon functions, but it was better than losing the card in the event of my likely death. In one way or another, I would return to the Minor Altar — either by using Jump, or by triggering Guaranteed Resurrection. The latter wouldn’t transfer my equipment along with me, so I preferred to leave everything I wouldn’t need in the upcoming venture in a safe place. Right here, for example. The list of “unnecessary items” was extensive and included the blocked Spatial Ring (D) and the Dagger of Heresy (D). A sword would be enough in battle. I didn’t want to risk losing both divine artifacts. As for other weapons, I wasn’t eight-armed Shiva, so one spare set would be enough.

The transfer of spoils from the last mission took the longest. Some might be radioactive, but this wasn’t a problem inside the bag. Now that I’d discarded the extra load, I could move more easily.
