"It is a long story," said Israel. "But I'm free now. I will tell you all about it. By the way, where did you guys get that sweet ride?"

"The owner died and left us the car," said Conor.

"Sweet! I was heading up to your place. Where are you going?"

"We are going to the club to get Maria's check. We'll be back in ten minutes."

"All right. I'll see you when you get back. I'll just walk."

The light changed and King swung the Mercedes around the corner and rolled down Sunset. He parked in front of the club. Conor jumped out and tried the door for the main entrance but it was locked. He knocked. Ruben, the day shift bouncer, answered.

"Hey Conor," said Ruben. "We're closed but I can let you in."

"Thanks, buddy," said Conor.

Ruben smiled. Ruben was a big guy, with a shaved head and the tattoo of a skull on his neck. His arms were the size of Conor's legs. But Conor always thought Ruben was a little slow, like Lennie from Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. He was a good bouncer and security guard, but lacked the intellect to resolve problems without physical force.

"Wanda said to give you an envelope when you got here," said Ruben. "She's not here. She went to pick up lunch."

Ruben let Conor into the club. The room was well lit, which was unusual. On the stage was the body of a man, laying face down. His body had not been covered. He was at the section of the stage that was usually reserved for the dancer.

"Is that the guy?" asked Conor.

"Yeah. He jumped on stage and pulled a knife on Hazel. She screamed and I grabbed him and pulled him off the stage. He had a crazy look in his eyes. I asked him to leave but he didn't listen and he cut my arm."

Ruben showed Conor his covered wound. There was a bandage on his forearm.

"I slammed his head into the pole and he died. Right there."

Ruben was not worried about divulging the details of the incident and he showed no remorse. Incidents like that were common and the authorities always sided with the business owners.

Conor walked over to the dead man and turned his cold head around. On the side of his face he had a huge, bloody gash courtesy of Ruben and next to his ear, he had a small piercing courtesy of The Corporation. Conor gently placed the man's head back into the original down position and walked back over to Ruben. He looked in the envelope that Ruben had given him.

"I need Ginger's check too," said Conor.
