CHAPTER 20
Mrs. Stevenson
Once outside Miss Jennings house, Lexie grabbed Mikeyâs arm.
âWell? Did the key fit in the box?â
He shook his head. âNo, unfortunately.â
âCrud. Okay, well, at least we got some good information from Miss Jennings,â Destrey said. They all walked along the sidewalk. The snow glistened in the sunlight.
âYeah, and hopefully, the secretary will be at the funeral, huh?â Lexie said.
âHopefully,â Mikey sighed. âSo⦠who should we interview next? Reverend Johnson? Any more townsfolk you can think of?â
âReverend Johnson wonât know anything,â Destrey said. âHe didnât live here back then.â
âOh yeah,â Mikey said. âI forgot.â
âI donât know about Reverend Johnson,â Lexie said. They all turned to her.
âWhat do you mean you donât know about him?â Donnie asked.
Lexie shrugged. âI guess thereâs just something about him thatâ¦that is unsettling.â
Destrey looked at Donnie. âUh, okayâ¦â
âCan you, um, elaborate for us?â Donnie joked. He nudged Destrey and the two chortled.
âGo ahead and make fun of me, but Iâm serious.â Lexie walked a little faster. âThereâs something about him that gives me the creeps.â
âYeah, me too,â Mikey said. Destrey and Donnie looked at him with raised eyebrows as though shocked.
âReally?â Donnie said.
âMy parents stopped going to church because they said Reverend Johnson never really preaches, but just tells stories or holds meetings at the church,â Lexie continued.
âReally?â Destrey said.
âYeah, and sometimes he says strange things,â she said.
âLike what?â Chad asked as they turned the corner and headed down the sidewalk behind the school. He kicked some snow off the sidewalk.
Lexie turned around and walked backwards so they could see her as she spoke. âWell, this one time, I was telling him how upset I was about getting a B on a math test and he started lecturing me about how I wasnât a very good student and should spend less time talking with boys and more time studying. He called me a tease and a flirt!â
Donnie crinkled his brow. âSeriously?â
Mikey shook his head. âWhat a jerk.â
âDoesnât sound like what a reverend would say, you know?â Destrey said.
âYeah, it was so strange. I mean, he made me feel pretty bad.â She turned around and looked down at her feet as she walked.
âI know what you mean.â Mikey walked next to her. âThereâs something about him.â
Mikey wanted to tell them how he caught the Reverend in a lie, but he wasnât sure.
âAnd, the other dayâ¦â Mikey hesitated.
âWhat Mike?â Chad asked. But Mikey had second thoughts when he saw his house nearby.
âNevermind,â he said. For some reason, he didnât feel like telling them about what he heard at the church when the detective was there.
âWell, I guess we can talk to my dad,â Destrey said. âHe and my mom might be able to add something.â
âAlright. After the funeral, weâll interview Destreyâs folks. Okay?â Mikey said as he approached his house. âNow letâs go play.â He bent down, took some snow, and threw it in Chadâs face.
Lexie gasped and covered her mouth. Destrey and Donnie laughed as Chad wiped the snow off his face.
âYou are so dead, man!â Chad shouted as he chased a laughing Mikey down the street.
