White to move

Kasparov appeared to have counterplay (23 ♗xb5 ♘g4). But this was a mirage. He was lost after 23 ♘xb5! ♘bc6 24 a3.

He resigned after 24…d5 25 exd5 ♖xd5 26 ♖xd5 exd5 27 b4 ♕a4 28 ♖xd5.

Neighborhood Effect

I hear some readers protesting: “The real reason White attacked the kingside in that game is that a king is a more valuable target than a weak pawn or square.”

But if you always follow that logic you will find yourself throwing your pieces at an impregnable king position.

The best target is the most vulnerable one. Even if is just a square, seizing control of it can open neighboring squares to invasion. Then the whole sector can collapse. Here’s how this happens.
