He called his friend at the FBI again, trying to get Dominica out of his head. He reached his machine and left a message. The gist of it was that he’d appreciate seeing the dossier, or whatever the guy had, on Vasily and Aleksandr Zinoviev and he’d be happy to reciprocate with some of the shots he’d taken up at the Russians’ house.
At a little after eleven, he knocked on Rose’s door. She didn’t answer, so he turned the knob and walked into her house. Through the French doors in back he saw her in her pool. Doing laps.
Then, as he got closer, he saw that—yes, in fact, she was doing laps—but completely nude. As she made a turn at the deep end, she spotted him out of the corner of her eye, smiled, and gave him a little wave.
She swam a little further, then stopped in the middle of the pool and looked over. Crawford just concentrated on making solid eye contact and not letting his eyes stray. It was about five feet deep where she was. As she stood, Crawford noticed—not for the first time—how gym-trim and tight she was. And, though she wasn’t exactly flaunting it, she certainly wasn’t hiding what God, and her Romanian trainer, had created.
Squinting a little, her long blonde hair splayed out around her, her breasts just breaking the surface of the water, Rose playfully squirted a jet of water out of her mouth at him.
“Hi, Charlie.”
He gave her a little wave. “Maybe I should come back when you find your bikini.”
Rose laughed. “Funny boy,” she said. “You know, after what happened, I didn’t dare go in my pool for a while.”
It didn’t click right away. Then he got it.
“Oh, yeah, you mean the snakes.”
“Yeah, can you imagine? What a horrible way to go.”
“I know,” he said, having difficulty maintaining eye contact. “Rose, I would really appreciate it if you put something on.”
She got up on her tiptoes. “Why don’t you just jump in and cool off?”
“Left my bathing suit at home.”
“Good place for it.”
He shook his head. “I’d get a sunburn in all the wrong places.”
“You know, Charlie, you’re really no fun,” she said. “Oh, hey, that reminds me: Maddy Sorenson told me you came by her office and asked her a million questions.”
Crawford shrugged. “Yeah, so? That’s my job.”
“I really don’t see Maddy being your type, Charlie,” she said. “You know, she’s so aggressive.”
Crawford had a feeling Rose saw herself as his type.
“Rose, just for the record,” he said, “I didn’t go see Maddy Sorenson to ask her out.”
Rose laughed and started walking toward the pool steps. She was walking deliberately, almost in slow motion, like a model down a runway. Then suddenly she turned toward him at the top step.
He was peeking.
“Busted,” she said as his eyes shot to a nearby gumbo-limbo tree off to her right. He kept his eyes trained on it, like its bark was totally mesmerizing.
“Didn’t know you were such a tree lover, Charlie. It’s okay to look now.
