Conclusion
As we have seen in this chapter, the story emerging from research on cheating closely resembles what we have already seen for helping, harming, and lying. Here too there is good reason to believe we have a powerful capacity to follow the rules and not cheat in certain situations. Yet right alongside is a powerful capacity to cheat for our own benefit in other situations. “Honesty” seems too simple a label. But so does “dishonesty.” A different way of thinking about our characters is needed.
Enough already, then, with introducing more experiments. Let’s step back from the details and, using the studies we have already seen, try to paint a bigger picture of what most of us are really like deep down.
What we find is that our characters are, to put it bluntly, pretty mixed up.
