Chapter 28

June’s rented cottage was cosy. It was filled with shabby chic furniture, traditional with a contemporary twist. She was dressed today in a perfectly ironed cream linen dress, and a gold knitted wrap. Three ornate necklaces hung elegantly around her neck, and five pearly bracelets clung tightly together around her thin wrist. I asked where she was going, but she was having a day in. I glanced down ruefully at what I was wearing: once again, black trousers and a plain black top. Maybe a wardrobe refurbishment would help me inwardly.

I’d called to see June on my way to Clare’s. Her visit to the area seemed to be flowing by very fast, I was worried she’d leave before I’d had answers to all my questions. Yes, there was email, phone, skype and whatever else modern technology could throw at us, but it wasn’t the same as talking face-to-face.

‘Do you know that your father lost a business?’ she said casually, pouring tea into the dainty china cups.

‘Really? Marianne never said.’

‘Don’t suppose she would.’ She handed me the hot cup, my hands appreciating the warmth. ‘It was before her time.’

‘I thought he was a site manager; or something like that, anyway.’

‘He was, but before that.’ June sipped her drink. ‘He had his own electrical company, but he couldn’t keep it going, so he had to close it down.’

‘I can’t remember him owning his own company.’

‘Oh yes, for many years, you were probably too young to understand. His depression really started when he lost the company, although he had bouts of it beforehand, losing the company sent him over the edge, I think,’ June said, confirming a question that had played on my mind for years. ‘It got a lot worse when Lanie died.’

‘Libby’s going through a bad time at the moment,’ I admitted. I’d not really told June too much about how Calvin had died, just that he’d taken something he shouldn’t have. I had no idea whether she knew what I was talking about, but she didn’t ask any further questions, which suited me. ‘Since losing Calvin she’s not herself. She doesn’t come out of her room. I’m really worried about her.’

‘I didn’t want to say I’d not seen much of her, I wasn’t sure if Marianne had put her off seeing me.’

‘Why would Marianne do that?’

‘Perhaps Libby is suffering like your dad did. Once they’re in a bad place it can take a hell of lot to get them out.’ June ignored my question.

‘I don’t think Dad ever came out of it.’

‘Alcohol doesn’t help.’ June shook her head. I didn’t ask if Dad was a drinker before Mum died; I just nodded in agreement, not wanting to analyse his troubled personality. ‘Have you taken her to the doctor’s?’

‘She won’t go. We can’t really drag her by her hair.’ I tried to smile, make light of the serious situation.

‘You could call the doctor out,’ June suggested.

‘Suppose we could; but then yesterday she went out after lunch; not sure where, or what time she got back, or if she got back at all.
