Chapter 28
Juneâs rented cottage was cosy. It was filled with shabby chic furniture, traditional with a contemporary twist. She was dressed today in a perfectly ironed cream linen dress, and a gold knitted wrap. Three ornate necklaces hung elegantly around her neck, and five pearly bracelets clung tightly together around her thin wrist. I asked where she was going, but she was having a day in. I glanced down ruefully at what I was wearing: once again, black trousers and a plain black top. Maybe a wardrobe refurbishment would help me inwardly.
Iâd called to see June on my way to Clareâs. Her visit to the area seemed to be flowing by very fast, I was worried sheâd leave before Iâd had answers to all my questions. Yes, there was email, phone, skype and whatever else modern technology could throw at us, but it wasnât the same as talking face-to-face.
âDo you know that your father lost a business?â she said casually, pouring tea into the dainty china cups.
âReally? Marianne never said.â
âDonât suppose she would.â She handed me the hot cup, my hands appreciating the warmth. âIt was before her time.â
âI thought he was a site manager; or something like that, anyway.â
âHe was, but before that.â June sipped her drink. âHe had his own electrical company, but he couldnât keep it going, so he had to close it down.â
âI canât remember him owning his own company.â
âOh yes, for many years, you were probably too young to understand. His depression really started when he lost the company, although he had bouts of it beforehand, losing the company sent him over the edge, I think,â June said, confirming a question that had played on my mind for years. âIt got a lot worse when Lanie died.â
âLibbyâs going through a bad time at the moment,â I admitted. Iâd not really told June too much about how Calvin had died, just that heâd taken something he shouldnât have. I had no idea whether she knew what I was talking about, but she didnât ask any further questions, which suited me. âSince losing Calvin sheâs not herself. She doesnât come out of her room. Iâm really worried about her.â
âI didnât want to say Iâd not seen much of her, I wasnât sure if Marianne had put her off seeing me.â
âWhy would Marianne do that?â
âPerhaps Libby is suffering like your dad did. Once theyâre in a bad place it can take a hell of lot to get them out.â June ignored my question.
âI donât think Dad ever came out of it.â
âAlcohol doesnât help.â June shook her head. I didnât ask if Dad was a drinker before Mum died; I just nodded in agreement, not wanting to analyse his troubled personality. âHave you taken her to the doctorâs?â
âShe wonât go. We canât really drag her by her hair.â I tried to smile, make light of the serious situation.
âYou could call the doctor out,â June suggested.
âSuppose we could; but then yesterday she went out after lunch; not sure where, or what time she got back, or if she got back at all.
