As we pulled up to the cabin, I looked around the surrounding woods. We were in such a beautiful spot and so far, all we’d done was chase our proverbial tails. Maybe getting out into nature was exactly what we needed. I turned to Ben and saw him watching me with a smile on his face.

“Why don’t we pack a picnic and take the cats for a hike?” he asked.

“How did you know what I was thinking?”

He leaned over and kissed me softly on the lips.

“I always know what you’re thinking. Razzy, what do you say? Are you up for a hike with the boys?”

“Let’s do it!”

Ben parked the car, and I took Razzy inside, carrying her in my arms instead of putting her back in her kennel. It was one of those rare days where, even though the sun was out, the breeze kept it comfortably cool. I couldn’t wait to follow some trails and see where they took us.

Ben opened the door for me, and I put Razzy down before heading to the kitchen. I heard a sharp cry and turned in time to see Rudy launching himself from behind the couch on top of Razzy’s back. He bounced up, completely oblivious to the dirty look she was shooting at him.

“Did you see that? I caught you completely off guard. You didn’t know I was coming, did you?”

Gus joined them. His whiskers were quirked as he dipped his head at Razzy. Her fur was fluffed in fifty different directions, and she didn’t look thrilled. Her blue eyes blazed and promised swift retaliation for Rudy.

“Sorry, Razz. I’m teaching the kid to hunt. I didn’t know he’d try out his newfound skills on you,” Gus said, scraping the floor with his paw.

“That was amazing! I’ve never heard you screech like that,” Rudy said. “Did you hear me approach? I was really trying to be quiet.”

“No. I didn’t hear. Good job. You completely took me off guard.” Razzy said, gritting out the words.

I studiously avoided making eye contact with Ben as he joined me in the kitchen. If we looked at each other right now, one of us was going to burst out laughing, and that was the last thing I wanted to do. Rudy continued to bounce around, while Razzy put her fur back to rights. Ben grabbed a jar of peanut butter from the cabinet while I opened the loaf of bread we’d brought. As soon as he opened the jar, three sets of interested eyes turned towards us.

“What are you making?” Gus asked.

“Some sandwiches, bud. How do you three feel about taking a hike into the woods?” Ben asked.

“Hooray!”

Rudy spun in a quick circle as they joined us in the kitchen while we assembled a few sandwiches. I checked the label on the jar, making sure the ingredients were cat safe, before smearing a little peanut butter on my finger for Razzy to lick. She was the only cat I’d ever met who actually liked the stuff. By the time she’d polished off her little treat, she looked a lot less mad.
