MOST CHAMELEONS EAT INSECTS AND PLANTS
As they emerged at Waterloo Station, Cat noticed she had a missed call from Caroline.
Miranda, her ankle now completely recovered, skipped over to the machine to get the tickets while Cat called her daughter back.
âMum,â said Caroline, her voice full of desperate emotion, âAnthonyâs been charged! I canât believe it. Charged! Itâs not right.â
Cat felt cold. She didnât know how to help. If anything, everything they had found so far seemed to add to the mystery surrounding Anthony.
âDid they find something else?â
âYes, but itâs rubbish, not true.â She paused and Cat heard the rustle of chocolate paper. âThey found some old blood on the floor. DNA testing shows initially that it is from Anthonyâs blood type ⦠Look, I donât really understand it, but the lawyer said it has some kind of genetic resemblance to Anthonyâs mtDNA, so it could be some relative of Anthony or Anthony himself.â
Cat pinched the end of her nose. âSomeone from Anthonyâs family? Thatâs weird. Or was that police sarcasm?â
Her daughter made a noise. âApparently they need more tests. And they need to find members of his family.â
âOh,â said Cat.
Would they go and ask George and Kaya for samples? Or Anthonyâs brother? Where was this going? She had a feeling she read something about mtDNA being the most reliable way to check heredity, but she didnât say anything about it to Caroline, who was quite anxious enough already.
âWhat happens next?â Cat asked.
âHe goes in front of magistrates and the police ask for remand in custody. The lawyer is going to ask for bail, but he says they probably wonât get it.â
Cat stared at the roof of the Tube station. âWhat is the lawyer going to say? I mean, how is he trying to convince the magistrates theyâve got the wrong person and will be putting an innocent man on remand?â
There was more chocolate paper scuffling before Carolineâs voice came back slightly stronger. âWell, we know that Anthony was outside Kingâs College when he talked to you. You are his alibi, but the lawyer says the police wonât buy it. He says they say they only have Anthonyâs word for the fact that he was there. Oh Mum! If only youâd do WhatsApp video calls, youâd be a much better witness.â
Cat raised an eyebrow. Looks like it was all her fault. How did that happen?
âWhat about tracking records?â she asked. âI thought that was the problem with phones; they always know where you are. Or CCTV?â
âSure but! The lawyer is trying to get the information from Apple, but apparently they havenât been very forthcoming. If Anthony is found guilty, Iâll never use an Apple phone again.â
Her mother said nothing. She wondered if the police had requested the CCTV from Kingâs.
âAnd against him they have the gun, the silencer, the shooting certificate,â said Caroline, âandâcan you believe thisâtheir DNA testing also found a match to one of the hairs in Rupertâs flat. How can that be? It must be police incompetence like in that Foxy Knoxy case ⦠you know where the police accidentally got the boyâs DNA on the bra.
