Chapter Twenty-Three

Collin checked the time. It was half past nine. The rest of the workers would arrive in approximately a half an hour and Hywel was still passed out on the booth. Collin rubbed his eyes. He was tired and it wasn’t just from his second near-death experience. He felt more and more exhausted all the time, as if his body was about ready to give out on him. He wouldn’t let it happen though, he would just have to push through whatever this feeling was that lingered over him.

He let the entire scene play over in his head once more. James came with another demon in hopes to get Gwen back. Collin feared that he wanted to hurt her, but if that were so, he wouldn’t have been so careful to get her back. If James wanted to hurt her, he would have just gone straight for her, not negotiate for her, which brought even more questions to Collin’s mind. What could they have to negotiate? The question preoccupied him so he didn’t notice Hywel start to come to.

“What? Where am I?” Hywel’s head shot up on the booth as he glanced around cautiously.

Collin hurried to his side with a bottle of scotch. A nice bottle of scotch. If he could get him to drink enough, he might forget what had just happened. At least that was what Collin hoped.

“It’s all right, you are back in the pub.” Collin started to twist open the bottle.

“What the hell happened? Who were those men? What, what, what...” Hywel started shaking. “What was wrong with their eyes?”

Collin placed his hand on his shoulder. “Calm down Hywel. They’re gone.”

“But who were they? What did they want with you? What was wrong with their eyes?” His eyes didn’t stop moving back and forth. Collin had never seen someone move their eyes so fast.

Collin handed him the bottle of scotch. He took a big gulp. Collin realized it would take a few nice swigs before he would have any reaction. Hywel really knew how to hold his liquor.

“I mean, I’ve never seen anything like that!” He swallowed what alcohol he still had in his mouth as he spoke. “They looked possessed!” He took another swig.

Collin watched for any reaction to the alcohol. Still nothing. He would know the difference between sober and not, he dealt with seeing the effects every day amongst many different types of individuals. “Just take a deep breath okay?”

“They threatened me, Collin!” Hywel threw his hands up in the air. “Why? What was I to them?”

They just used him to get inside, but he couldn’t explain that to him. “Nothing, you were nothing to them.” In the end, he really wasn’t. He just was another human to use to their advantage. Just like he was.

Hywel shook his head. “And how did they even grab me? I was in the front and suddenly I was in the back! How the bloody hell did that happen?”

“I really don’t know, but please pull yourself together, we have to get ready for the day.
