Twenty-four

I gripped the loops of my backpack where they fitted around the front of my shoulders, acknowledged all the sources of power and insight that were around me and within me, and spun around to face Tait and Chloe. Adam and Maddie took a few steps back, away from the scene, and I began to stride forward decisively.

Tait held the knife high in the air and screamed at me in Welsh, then English. “Don’t you come anywhere near me, don’t you dare now!”

Chloe sagged against his arm and he had to shift his weight to catch her. The knife stayed in his hand but he couldn’t use it; he wanted to keep Chloe on her feet but she seemed to have completely fainted. By fear or by magic, I could not tell.

So I kept on walking forward until I was just ten feet away from him, and I stumbled as I came slap-bang up against a protection he had cast around them. Or maybe it came from the stone circle itself. Certainly there was power there, humming up from the stones which were invisible, buried deep in the snow.

I put out my hands and placed them against the solid air that surrounded him, feeling for a way in. He had drawn on the energy of the earth and it was neither good nor bad; it simply was. I asked for entry, neutrally and politely, and it parted for me.

He let Chloe crumple to the ground but as she fell, still unconscious, she caught the knife with her heavy coat sleeve and it was knocked from his hand. He whirled around and put his hands up to me, like an old-school boxer.

“I am warning you now!” he yelled. “I will call down the terrors of the night upon you, I will!”

“I am the terrors of the night,” I told him, and a little thrill went through me that I’d managed to come up with something that sounded pretty cool. I hoped that Adam had heard it.

And that it didn’t put him off me being his girlfriend and all that.

“You have no idea what I can bring down here at my will!” Tait called.

He put his hands to the sky then, and tipped his head back, and he howled with an intensity that made my spine tingle. He was like a madman, like a wolf, like a screaming banshee.

I hesitated, and it was my undoing. I should have run forward before he completed his spell but I wanted to be sure what I was running into.

The thing is, sometimes you can’t be sure, and yet you have to act regardless.

I didn’t act.

That second was all he needed. Then there were hoof beats and I thought for a moment it was only the Wild Hunt – only! As if they were safe! – but it was not the Hunt, not at all, nothing like. There were teeth, great white slabs like gravestones and there was hair, black and thick and matted with blood, and there was muscle like rocks and ropes.
