Chapter 9

“You know, when I found out I had a cousin and that she would be attending the Academy with me, I thought she’d be boring and kind of plain.” Ryder snorts. “But you are an odd one, that’s for sure.”

My chest tightens and I look away, my lips pinching together as his words strike at my old wound. But a wide smile spreads across Gwen’s face as her eyes move between us. “I think it’s amazing. To be able to—”

“You need to teach me how to manifest my elements. This is so freaking cool!” Aria’s eyes sparkle as she shoots a small fireball toward Sparky, who swats it back to her with his tail. His eyes gleam as she hits it back, and they continue their magical game of tennis.

“No, this is not ‘freaking cool,’ Aria.” Daigo glowers from the window seat. “Don’t forget the reason why this happened in the first place.”

The woman’s glowing ruby eyes fill my mind and the fear of death worms it’sits way under my skin. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget that face.

Gwen pulls her mouth to one side. “What if it was just a wrong place, wrong time kind of thing? Maybe she spooked the celestial and it just… lashed out.”

“I was only reading,” I say plainly.

Gwen sighs. “True…”

“Are you going to tell your parents? Uncle Michael will be super pissed if he found out you were attacked,” Ryder asks with his lips pursed together.

And that is the million-dollar question. Do I tell my parents I was attacked by a celestial and have them even more freaked out and worried? Or do I not say anything and avoid burdening them any more than I already have? God knows being my parents has never been easy.

I shake my head, and Ryder’s frown deepens.

“We need to talk to you, Lilah.” My eyes move to Oberon who is standing quietly by the front door.

I tilt my head at him, then look at Tempestus and Vox. They both nod.

“I need some fresh air…” I mutter and move to stand.

Daigo darts to my side. “I’ll come with you.”

Followed by Ryder. “Me too.”

I sigh. “Guys, I’ll be fine. I just need some time alone to think.”

Ryder shrugs and backs down almost immediately, but Daigo watches me for a moment longer.

“Call to me if you need me. I’ll be listening for you.”

I nod, disguising it as checking my shoelaces, then head toward the door, my elements on my heels. Oberon opens it and steps out into the thankfully empty hallway.

“So what did you guys want to talk about?” I ask as we continue down the quiet halls toward the stairs.

“Not here,” Tempestus says.

And so we continue our walk in silence. Or, at least my walk, while the others merely float ever-so-slightly above the ground. We descend the multiple staircases and make it to the hall of classrooms, when I hear whispers.

I slow and my elements wait behind me as we approach a classroom door, left ajar. The voices are coming from inside.
