Here in the United States, I think of Aaron Smith, who started Venture Expeditions as a college student more than a decade ago. Instead of accepting the security of a regular job, he chose to launch this nonprofit, which helps leaders discover their passions through adventure-driven humanitarian efforts that raise money for worthy Christian organizations. Aaron began by biking across America, more than three thousand miles from the West Coast to the East. The expedition raised more than seventeen thousand dollars for a South American congregation. Today, Venture Expeditions leads multiple teams on courageous journeys for charitable causes and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for partner organizations.

I also think of Scotty Smiley, a guest of ours at Catalyst Dallas in 2011, who is a modern hero who was severely injured in the line of fire in Iraq, losing his eyesight. Since then, in 2007, he has climbed mountains, snow-skied, surfed, and participated in many other activities. He is the first blind officer in the US Army and continues to serve his country at the US Military Academy at West Point as an instructor.
