Cat lovers can readily be identified. Their clothes always look old and well used.

Eric Gurney, How to Live with a Calculating Cat

People meeting for the first time suddenly relax if they find they both have cats. And plunge into anecdote.

Famous Cat Haters

An ailurophobe is someone who has an irrational and intense fear of cats, often because they had a traumatic experience involving a cat when they were very young. Famous ailurophobes include Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Julius Caesar. Other people, however, just seem to have it in for the poor creatures for no apparent reason:

Alexander the Great

The celebrated war-monger who conquered vast areas of the ancient world, is said to have swooned at the sight of a cat.

Johannes Brahms

The composer is reported to have gleefully shot at neighbourhood cats with a bow and arrow from the window of his house in Vienna.

Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon was once seen flailing about wildly with his sword and clammy with fear, all because a mere kitten was hiding behind a tapestry in the same room as him.

Ivan the Terrible

Ivan lived up to his name even as a child, when he would amuse himself by hurling cats out of high windows.

Rockwell Sayre

Chicago banker Rockwell Sayre thought cats were ‘filthy and useless’ and took it upon himself to see that all cats in the world were destroyed. In the 1920s he offered rewards to people for killing cats. Thankfully he died long before coming close to achieving his aim!

Henri III of France

He might have been bold as a lion, but the sight of a humble kitty was enough to make him faint. During his reign 30,000 cats were put to death.
