Chapter 16

A s we pulled into the Hipp Subs parking lot, I spotted Penny and Patti at the picnic table adjacent. I parked the car nearby and Nick and I went to join them.

The sisters were in their 70s, but made it clear they didn’t understand retirement. They were the brains behind the Widowbrook Walking Club, aka Citizens On Patrol, and I had yet to see them anywhere near their own house.

Patti stood half a foot shorter than me at about five feet flat, and perpetually used a walking stick. Her younger sister Penny stood about two inches shorter and, while just as grey-haired as her sister, had a twinkle in her eye that spoke mischief and defied age. Maybe it was the t-shirt she had on that said, “Follow me, I’m lucky.” As I sat, Nick jumped up onto the tabletop. They continued the current conversation as though they expected me to listen and catch up.

“One thing I’d like to know is why they picked our city to do this then. It’s terribly rude.” Patti thumped her fist down on the table.

“I’m also curious if it was because of our recent history,” Penny said.

A chill ran through me.

I hadn’t thought that could be a thing.

“Do you mean like how there are fan clubs for serial killers, that kind of thing?”

“Yes. Kind of like that. You know, on those social media sites where they have trends.”

“Right, like internet trends. I’ve seen those lists. Like that.”

“You don’t think David is luring people here—” I couldn’t finish the sentence. It was unthinkable. I don’t care how much I hate the guy. I don’t think he would offer our city as a viable place to do your murder. It wasn’t safe. Not for them. Not for their targets. How could we stop this from happening? Catch them. Then make sure the world knew they all got caught.

“You’re going to need to watch out for yourself one of these days,” Patti said. “If someone decides the only reason people aren’t getting away with murder is because of you, they might make you the target so that they can get… I don’t know, maybe they wanted a stronger reputation with other killers? Is there such a thing?”

“Maybe we should just concentrate on our current thing,” Penny said.

She had her arms wrapped tightly around her waist now, and her face was a little paler than usual. A little wane.

“What’s making me angry right now is the wife is in complete denial,” Penny said. “She’s insisting that it was an overdose, even though she was there.”

“They all know the safe dosages as horticulture students.”

“Students? Do you mean they’re in school? Like college or something?”

“Well, that’s the disturbing part about this. At least half of them are in the same night class at a mainland college. Mr. Maitlen showed an unusual level of curiosity about illicit uses for plants that cause hallucination. I think I phrased that right.” She looked at her sister with her eyebrows raised.

Her sister shrugged.
