CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Isnatched up the phone, popped it in my handbag, and hurried over to where Farhad was standing with the crew who had the cue cards.

He grabbed one of the cards and began to scribble on it.

"Not now," he muttered to me as we came up to him. "I'm in the middle of an emergency."

"We're here to help," I said. "Give us the cards. We'll hold them for you."

Farhad scribbled one card and gave it to me to hold up.

Allegra glanced at the card I was holding up, and her features softened with visible relief.

"Presia is more than happy to answer any and all questions," she said, turning to look at the interviewer with fake sincerity in her eyes. "We are more than happy to talk about our employee, Karyn Strieb. Please ask me any questions about her that you’d like, and I’d be happy to answer them."

Farhad handed me another cue card that I held up.

Allegra read the card quickly and then continued to talk. "We had thought that investors would not be interested in knowing about Karyn and what an invaluable employee she was, but if this is what they would like to talk about, then I will more than happily discuss everything. Now, what did you want to ask me?"

The interviewer smiled, happy that she had gotten things to go her way. In exchange, she lobbed an easy question at Allegra.

"Can you tell us a little bit about what Karyn was like as an employee?"

"Of course," said Allegra. She glanced toward where Farhad was holding up a cue card. Unfortunately, in his hurry, Farhad's handwriting hadn't been the best, and he’d misspelled the word “beacon.”

Allegra squinted at the card and read out, "Karyn was bacon."

She looked confused and glanced over at Farhad.

Next to me, Rosie spread her arms out wide and tried to mime what a beacon of light looked like. She made her hand drop down as though it was a ray of light dropping, but Allegra just looked confused. Then inspiration hit. Farhad capitalized the "E," and Allegra read, "Karyn was a beacon of inspiration."

"Her dedication to innovation was unmatched. She was always so focused on her work, and her intellect and creativity knew no buns."

The interviewer frowned. "What buns?"

Allegra had misread "bounds," but she stumbled through it regardless. "I mean, she wasn't swayed by that Star Trek hairstyle of buns, you know. We are all huge Star Trek fans here at Presia."

That didn’t make too much sense, but the interviewer seemed to accept that some tech firms were huge Star Trek fans.

Allegra looked at the next cue card. "Her con was impactful."

Now the interviewer looked concerned. "She was involved in a con?"

"No. No," said Allegra quickly, glancing at the next cue card. This time, Rosie had spelled out the word in its entirety. "I meant to say contributions. Sorry. I've been stuttering a bit. It's just I'm so sad about her death. What we mean to say," Allegra said, glancing away from the cue cards, "is that Karyn was just an exemplary employee.
