Chapter 14.
A moment of sheer awkwardness passed where the three women stared at each other. With pursed lips, Sam waited for Melissaâs inevitable outburst, but it never came.
âWho is this?â Melissa gestured to the beautiful woman sat at the marble kitchen island, her voice calm and collected.
âThis is, ummââ
Lilith rose from barstool with the elegance of a jungle cat and held out her hand. âLilith. You must be Melissa.â
âI am.â
âIâve heard lots about you.â
âReally?â Melissa shot her a polite smile. âSam hasnât mentioned you before. What did you say your name was again?â
âLilith.â
Stunned, Sam watched the two women exchange pleasantries. There wasnât the faintest flicker of jealousy detectable on Melissaâs face, which was unusual. A week ago, sheâd have started World War III if she found another woman sitting in their kitchen this early. Today, nothing.
Unsure how to handle the situation, Sam gestured to Lilith. âLilith is⦠ummm⦠Iâm consulting on her case.â
âOh, really?â Melissa asked, her disinterest thinly veiled. âIsnât she a little young to be a detective?â
âIâm sitting right here,â Lilith remarked, her sharp voice slicing through the strange tension.
An apologetic look stretched across the other womanâs face as she nodded. âMy bad.â
Without saying anything else, Melissa rummaged through the drawers and cupboards until she found her favourite enamel dish and baking gloves. âThatâll do for now.â
âOkay.â Eager to separate the two, Sam ushered Melissa out of the kitchen. âOff you go then.â
âYes, yes, I must dash. Yoga waits for nobody.â
Relieved, Sam handed her one of her bags. âI still donât get why you like that so much, but have fun.â
âI will. Good luck at work with your associate,â Melissa replied politely.
âThank you.â With a smile, Sam pulled the door open. âItâs nice to be civil. I feared youâd be jealous or something.â
As soon the words rolled off her tongue and she saw Melissaâs face, she knew she shouldnât have said anything. If sheâd kept her mouth shut, her ex wouldâve left and everything wouldâve been fine.
Melissa turned to her, a frown weaved between her eyebrows. âJealous? Why would I be jealous? I mean, look at her.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â Sam countered.
âNothing. It means nothing.â
âYou donât think someone like Lilith would go for me?â
âI didnât say that. Sheâs just⦠Not everyone knows how to appreciate you.â
Samâs eyes widened. That was a punch to the gut. âWow... Wow.â
âDonât look at me like that. Sheâs just very young and you are, wellâ¦â Melissa gestured to Samantha. âYou.â
Another hurtful remark that hit home. It was even made worse that she said them all in such a calm and collected tone as if they were facts, not just her opinion.
âYou know, youâre only two years younger than me,â Sam countered bitterly. It was a weak and pathetic response, but she couldnât think of anything better.
Melissa let out a long sigh. âI donât understand the conversation weâre having. Do you want me to be jealous?â
âNo. But your comment is very insulting.â
âQuite,â Lilith suddenly quipped in, appearing in the arch of the kitchen. With swaying hips and clacking heels, she approached the two women quibbling at the front door.
