CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The sleek wooden door slid open with a whisper. Instantly, I was transported into a realm of subdued elegance.

The dimly lit space exuded an air of tranquility that was punctuated by the soft murmur of conversation and the gentle clinking of ceramic against wood. Stone and I were politely ushered to our seats at the intimate sushi counter.

I was happy wherever I was with Stone. Living in Vegas, I tended to frequent the more "regular" diners and cafes when I went out. But it sure was nice to visit somewhere fancy with Stone.

Smooth, polished cedar lined the walls. Its rich warmth was a stark contrast to the cool slate-gray tiles that adorned the floor. Delicate paper lanterns cast a warm amber glow over the minimalist decor. Their gentle light reflected off the gleaming surfaces of the immaculate sushi bar. Behind the counter, a lone sushi chef moved with the practiced grace of a dancer.

His deft hands sliced and shaped the fresh ingredients laid out before him. We settled into our seats, and the chef greeted us with a slight nod. His eyes crinkled at the corners in a wordless welcome.

Stone's gaze met mine, and I could see the faintest hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. He definitely was enjoying the place as much as I was.

The Omakase experience unfolded like a well-choreographed dance. Each meticulously crafted course was a delicate interplay of flavors and textures.

Tender slices of amberjack melted on my tongue. Their subtle sweetness was complemented by the bright, citrusy burst of yuzu zest. Creamy uni, rich and decadent, was offset by the briny pop of fresh ikura. Every bite was a revelation, a harmonious symphony of tastes and sensations.

I had thought I would focus only on me and Stone, our lives, and the beautiful surroundings we had found ourselves in, but I couldn't help thinking about the case so far. "Stone," I began. My voice was hushed as I leaned in close. "I've gotten some good leads in both cases, but both of my clients are pretty uncooperative."

Stone's eyes met mine seriously. His gaze was steady and unwavering, silently urging me to continue.

"Bob Scanlon seems to have some kind of connection to Godfrey’s death." Frustration had crept into my tone. "I'm not sure what exactly he's up to. And Agatha—she has a pretty strong motive to want Godfrey dead too. She clammed up the moment Nanna let slip that we knew about her presence at the dance studio."

My gaze dropped to the smooth, shiny, lacquered surface of the sushi bar. "There were glass shards found at both crime scenes. They could’ve been shards from Bob’s glasses, which we know got broken. So, Bob might have been there during the murder, but he's my own client."

Silence stretched between us, punctuated only by the soft scrape of the chef's blade against the cutting board.

I lifted my gaze to meet Stone's, searching his inscrutable expression. His eyes held mine. They were steady and unwavering. I knew what he meant to say.
