Chapter 22
When we got Sky back to the boat, Captain Jack was staring down at us in the water and glaring at Sky. Given the lime-green Speedo, I could understand a bit of good natured ribbing, perhaps even ridicule, but Captain Jack seemed furious. Since the guy had been shot in the shoulder by a spear gun, I thought his reaction was a bit over the top. But Captain Jack, way past simple criticism, was bordering on open hostility.
“What on earth is the matter with you?” Captain Jack yelled as he glared down at the artist.
“I got shot in the shoulder,” Sky said weakly as he stared up at him. “Isn’t it obvious?”
“I gotta go with Sky on this one,” Josie whispered. “It’s pretty hard to miss.”
“I think Captain Jack was going for rhetorical,” I whispered back.
“Oh.”
“Where did you get the spear gun?” Captain Jack said, his eyes flaring.
“Uh, I found it on the boat,” Sky said. “It was sitting near the snorkeling equipment. And you said we should help ourselves.”
“To the snorkeling gear, you idiot. You saw the speargun, and you just thought you’d take it?” Captain Jack said, his voice rising an octave. “Get him on the boat.”
We gently worked Sky to the stern, then helped him out of the water. After he had stretched out, dripping blood all over the boat, the four of us climbed aboard and removed our diving gear. Captain Jack, too angry to speak, leaned over Sky to examine the damage, then stood up and shook his head.
“You are one lucky son of a gun,” he said, rummaging through a toolbox.
“I beg to differ, Captain,” Sky said, inspecting his wound.
Captain Jack returned with a pair of metal cutters and cut the spear in two as close to the shoulder as he could. He tossed the long piece of the spear aside, then he opened a first aid kit and removed a tube of antiseptic cream and some bandages.
“You’re lucky because it only hit muscle. It doesn’t look like there’s any tendon damage, and it definitely didn’t hit bone.” Captain Jack nodded at Bill. “Hold this idiot still while I pull it out.”
“You sure you want to do that, Captain?” Sky said, flinching when Bill gently wrapped an arm around his neck.
“Well, I used the spear gun all day yesterday and didn’t get around to cleaning it. If you want to run the risk of fish guts and bacteria getting into your bloodstream, just let me know. I’ll be happy to leave it in there.”
“Is it going to hurt?” Sky said, staring up at Captain Jack like a scared little boy.
“Oh, you can count on it,” Captain Jack said, leaning down.
Despite his anger, Captain Jack gently wiggled what was left of the spear back and forth, then grabbed the spear tip and pulled it forward. Moments later, he handed the object to Henry who tossed it into a trash bin. A stream of blood oozed from the wound, and Captain Jack packed it tight with bandages then wrapped tape around Sky’s shoulder.
