And tried to dodge Mr. Petty. Sarah hadn’t known that he was such a gossip. Even Mrs. Ordway, in the role of a wet blanket, could do nothing to stem the questions and speculations about the art thefts and the artists in question. Nate Harwood, in Mr. Petty’s opinion, was an abomination, his son Roger uncouth, Mrs. McKenzie charming but headstrong, the Sheriff’s Department hopelessly lax.

Sarah finally escaped at nine and drove her wheezing old VW slowly toward her boarding house on the edge of Port Clyde. A fingernail of a moon had slipped into the sky, and the houses showed as dark boxes against the darker lines of pine and spruces. She braked coming into the almost empty village, swung left onto Horse Point Road, and accelerated in the dip so that the old car could make the rise without shifting. Then she saw in the rearview mirror the headlights of a car and, without thinking, further increased her speed. Somehow she wanted the road to herself—solitude after the irritations of the day. She shot to the top of the rise, but just before she lost the headlights in the mirror she saw the car swing off the road and disappear. That’s funny, she said to herself. I didn’t know there was a house there … just that old wharf.
