15. Learning the Ropes
I think itâs about time I explained what Hamish meant when he said I had a wizarding tutorial this afternoon. No matter how much I detest lying, I all too often have to settle for telling a version of the truth, rather than the whole truth.
My wizarding tutorial was a case in point. Once a week (and more if I could swing it) I took myself off, under the guise of receiving some lessons in order to prepare for Wentforthâs College for Wizards.
I really was enrolled at Wentforthâs for some night classes that autumn, and I couldnât wait to start. I was also getting wizarding lessons from one of the collegeâs approved tutors, in a manner of speaking.
The tutor in question, you see, was Peter Müd, the Wayfarer agent whose job it was to keep Uncle Faster in check. It had been clear to the Wayfarers that, if I were to keep doing the job I was doing, then I would need some magic at my disposal. And Peter was the perfect man for the job.
Firstly, no one outside of a select few knew he was a Wayfarer. Like me, he was working undercover â but Peter was working doubly hard. While my uncle thought he was a PI, the supernaturals in the city believed that Peter was master wizard at Wentforthâs, a man who worked on his wizarding research by day, and who gave private tutorials by night, in order to make ends meet.
The second reason that Peter was the perfect man for the job was that I liked him. The first time I realised just how much I liked him was when I heard him in an argument with Cullen. They were bickering about the fact that Cullen had eaten seven out of the ten mini-muffins from the box. Cullen said that Peter never ate more than one muffin, so what did it matter. Peter had countered by saying that while he might not have wanted any more muffins, Cullen should have at least had the decency to ask. Peter had then gone on to add, âItâs the principle of the thing.â
That was over a month ago, and Iâd warmed even more to Peter every day since. Piece by piece, Iâd shown him the items in Aunt Judeâs Toolkit, and so far he hadnât disappointed me. Instead, heâd trained me in how to use them. Or at least heâd tried to. But letâs save my ineptitude for the lesson, shall we?
I made my way to Peterâs a little quicker than usual, now that I had the Other Door at my disposal. It meant that I could nip down the alley and head right onto Eile Street. Anyone who knows a few words of Irish will know that Eile means other. The enclave used to be one of the few areas where many of the supernaturals formerly known as others could reside. Weredogs and wizards could work for as many witches as they wanted, but they couldnât live anywhere near them.
