It was all the sheep could do to keep up, and indeed the herd had spread itself into a thin line between an older, more retiring rear guard and a spritely youth contingent by the time we were crossing Glen Glennegie bridge.

The distillery was fine. It was calm and quiet and cooking away, with jolly great plumes of white fumes issuing from the chimney and, for that matter, from every fissure and split. The wind was slow and heavy with peaty perfume. There was, in short, an unquantifiable and yet undeniable shushability about everything — exactly like that period after a vicar has shown his slides of his visit to the Holy Land and he’s opened the floor to questions.

And then the distillery blew up.
