Chapter Eleven

After leaving the Art Co-op, I split off from Cora and head to the police station, where I insist on meeting with the Chief. I manage to get a copy of Corinne’s autopsy, as well as a transcript from Donnie’s and Peter’s interrogations. Chief is surprised to hear that Donnie was cheating on Corinne—he believed that Donnie and Melissa were just friends—but he doesn’t seem to think it’s all that important.

Have I mentioned I’m not crazy about Chief Holcomb?

I’m not.

I mean, seriously—not important?

Anyway, after talking myself blue in the face, trying to get him to understand that Donnie’s infidelity makes both Donnie and Melissa suspect, I give up. Chief is convinced that his hockey teammate Donnie is innocent and Peter is the killer, and nothing that I say is going to change his mind. So, with autopsy and interrogation paperwork in hand, I leave the station, ride home, and pour over the data I’ve gathered.

By five my head is swimming with facts. I give a big groan and chuck the papers into the air. They rain down around me as I flop back on the couch.

“Dramatic much?” Turkey asks. He’s sitting on the coffee table, tapping away on my laptop.

“I am getting nowhere!” I say. The papers settle all around me. “This is useless. Donnie’s statement is riddled with half-truths, and vague answers. He says he was out of the house that night, ‘visiting a friend’, and then provides Melissa as an alibi. How lame is that? Melissa isn’t just his friend. Melissa is his lover. That’s a pretty big difference, in my book.”

Turkey stops typing and jumps over to the couch next to me.

I pet him as I continue venting. “Plus, it even seems Peter lied to the cops in his statement. They asked him explicitly if he had stepped foot in the Wackler’s house recently. He said ‘no’. That has to be a lie, since they found his prints on the Wackler’s front door handle, the door into the guest room, and the French doors that go out to the balcony. Why did he lie? What’s he hiding? Have I been totally wrong about Peter?”

“You said you feel Peter is innocent,” Turkey says. “Let’s talk about that.”

“It’s an instinct,” I say. “You’re always telling me to trust my instincts, so this time I did. What if I got it wrong?”

Turkey arches his back while I pet him. “Let’s use logic,” he says. “Maybe you’ll feel more comfortable about your instincts if it can be confirmed with logic. You think Peter is innocent, and we want to find some logical reasons for that. What comes to mind?”

“Well, there’s the way he acted toward Annie at the Farmers Market. He was upset that his scarf was missing. I witnessed his body language with my own two eyes; I don’t think he was just acting for Annie’s sake. And that’s not the only thing. I also don’t like those boot prints Ted was so fired up about. I saw them, and they’re each about a foot apart.
