CHAPTER SIXTEEN
The next morning, I was woken up by the shrill tones of my phone.
I groaned and turned over in bed, wondering who would possibly be calling me at this hour. But when I checked the caller ID, my lips twisted upward despite the ungodly earliness of the hour.
Stone.
He must have just come back from his run, I figured. Or most likely, he'd showered and changed and then decided to call me. Maybe it wasnât as ridiculously early as Iâd thought it was. Maybe Iâd overslept. I checked the time.
Nope. It was just as ungodly as I'd expected. But for Stone, it probably wasn't so bad. He was used to waking up at a much more ungodly hour and then doing the much more ridiculous thing of actually going outside for a long run. Sometimes, he even added some strength training to his ridiculous workout regime. I had no idea why he did that, but it sure made him look good, and apparently, it kept him healthy.
Stone was healthy enough already. I didn't know why he had to go around obsessing about fitness on top of all that. But still, the man's fitness and health interests sure paid off, and he was a sight for sore eyes.
Not this morning, of course. The only sight I had this morning was that of my annoying phone insisting I pick it up. On the other side of the room, Rosie kept snoring away. Sometimes, that girl could sleep like a log, and at other times, she was woken up by the slightest of movements.
"Hello?" I rasped and winced at the gravelly croak of my own voice. "What's up, babe?"
"Tiff," Stone's voice crackled over the line. His tone was calm and measured as usual. "How are you doing?"
Trust him to open with the obvious. I texted him the night before, and now I was just beginning to regret it. Probably, I should have waited till I was wide awake and had some breakfast and caffeine in me before doing something so stupid as texting my boyfriend.
"I'm fine," I said. "How are you?"
"Maybe you're not fine," Stone suggested. "What with finding Chef Frankie's body and all that?"
"No, no," I said. "I'm definitely fine. How are you?"
There was silence on the other end of the line for a beat.
"I'm fine too," Stone said finally.
I beamed. "That's great then. We're both fine. Maybe I should head back to sleep now."
"I'm coming to join you," Stone said. "I'll stay at the bed and breakfast and help out while you investigate."
I was now wide awake enough to be slightly annoyed at my perfect boyfriend for waking me up too early in the morning.
"No," I said. "You don't have to do that. Like I said, I'm fine."
"Yes," Stone said, "but I think I'm only going to be fine if I'm staying with you. Remember that last time in Oregon when I went off to camp with my buddy and you ended up getting arrested?"
"That was just a misunderstanding." I tried to wave away his concerns.
