CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The next morning, we stepped outside to find Nanna and her team just about to leave, but the suite wasn’t going to be empty with their departure. Oh, no. In fact, it was fuller than it had ever been.

“What in the…”

Even Stone was stumped. I think his eyebrows went higher than I’d ever seen them when he saw what had been done to the huge living area.

The meditation master and her mats and other equipment were long gone, but two walls of the area had been taken up by food. Food, and people. Food people. Chefs, I thought, that was the word I was looking for—it was too early for all this.

Rosie was standing talking to one of the chefs, but upon hearing me, she turned around and bounded over.

“Boss! Look at this! It’s amazing.”

“It sure is something. What’s going on?”

“Chad dropped by earlier and asked if we like breakfast. I told him sure we do. And then…” Rosie turned back around, spread her arms, “this happened.”

“This is… breakfast?”

“Yep! Can I give you a tour?”

“Y’know, any breakfast that needs a tour to get around it is one I think I’m going to enjoy,” I said. “Lead on.”

Arm in arm with Stone, I felt like a royal princess as I was shown what was on offer. Starting on the left, was a chef-hatted woman, standing behind her white tableclothed-station. She had a gas burner in front of her, a frying pan on top, and to the side was a large brass bowl and whisk. Next to it, was a whole tray of eggs. On the other side of the burner was an array of ingredients.

“I am called Marie-Louise,” she said with a French accent and a pleasant smile. “I’ll be your omelet chef this morning.”

I’d never had an omelet chef before. Not a personal one, anyway.

“Incredible,” I said, slightly in awe.

“What can I prepare for mademoiselle?”

“Let me finish my tour and I’ll get back to you,” I told her. She looked slightly crestfallen. “I promise I’ll be back!”

Next up was Oliver.

“I have a range of European and American sausages and bacons, I also prepare fried and scrambled eggs in any style you please.”

“That sounds lovely, Oliver. Back soon!”

After another couple of steps we reached Jean, a tall woman with long arms who looked even more excited than me to be there. Had Chad told them all we were celebrities or something?

“I’m your wok chef this morning,” she said.

“Chinese food for breakfast?” I asked.

“No, it’s more of a general pan-Asian style. I’ve got soy sauce, teriyaki, garlic, ginger, mirin and all the other essentials, and then I have a dozen vegetables and fungi I can prepare for you.”

“I don’t usually have much teriyaki for breakfast,” I said. “But we’ll be back soon.”

Then we reached Arnold. A stocky, red-cheeked man who looked like a farmer from a hundred years ago.

“I’m your baker this morning. Unfortunately I won’t be baking the loaves to order as I don’t have the ovens and you don’t have the time, but take a look at some of the things I prepared earlier.
