Chapter Three Avery Adams sighed as he finished the last spider on a custom-ordered sheet cake. The whole week had been busy, culminating in the decoration of countless cupcakes and today's deliveries of three Halloween-themed wedding cakes. He couldn't complain about the workload. Not only did each cake mean more success for his business, but throwing himself into baking and decorating also gave him a chance to get away from his thoughts, which had been less than pleasant lately.

Waking up alone on Sunday morning had been like a bucket of ice water to the face. Avery had thought he and Mason had a real connection Saturday night. At first he'd thought it was just a strong attraction, but sometime during the night things had changed, at least on his end. Of course, waking up to an empty bed without even a note had made it painfully clear that Mason hadn't felt the same way. On Monday, his assistant and right-hand woman, Becca, had pried a bit of the story out of him. He hadn't told her everything, of course. She had commiserated with him about what jerks men could be, which he appreciated and found amusing at the same time.

One thing she couldn't do was give him a reason why Mason had left. Avery had no idea whether Mason had someone else, was in the closet, wasn't into commitment, or just didn't really like Avery as anything more than a one-off. The uncertainty bothered him more than he cared to admit. 27
