The Foxcatcher team had returned to the Divisional Headquarters right after breakfast. Seamus was anxious to get back on the case and so were all the others. Matelda had slept in a spare room in the suite, insisting she wasn’t going anywhere while Kerry was in captivity. Luigi brought a van to pick them all up, now their numbers had increased the seven-seater was not big enough.

They were sitting around the table about to start the meeting when Seamus’ phone beeped twice. He picked it up anxiously and saw it was a text message.

“What is it?” asked Vincenzo.

“It looks like a video,” said Seamus.

“Here, I will load it onto the big screen,” said Emanuele holding his hand out for the phone.

As anxious as he was to see it because he thought it might contain some pictures of Kerry, Seamus knew this was the right thing to do. He gave Emanuele the phone and within five minutes it was loaded onto the system. The video was output to a large monitor on the wall so they all could see. Emanuele pressed play and as soon as the kidnapper came on the screen holding the cutters there were gasps. It only got worse. Nobody could speak while they watched him make his threats, then he took Kerry’s hand and put her finger in the cutter’s jaws. Seamus’ knuckles grew whiter and whiter as he balled up his fists. When it came to the part where Kerry screamed, he could stand it no longer.

“Jesus Fucking Christ!” he shouted slamming his fist onto the table. He stood up and walked away turning his back to the screen. Hughes was beside him in a flash.

“It’s OK, Seamus, it’s OK, they didn’t do it, they didn’t do it.”

She put her arms around him holding him tight.

“Poor Kerry,” he said, “the way she screamed like that, I couldn’t stand it, Aileen, I couldn’t stand it.”

There were tears in his eyes and his face was contorted with pain.

“It’s OK, Seamus, it’s OK, really, it’s OK,” she said soothing, comforting, stroking his hair gently almost like a child. He put his head into her shoulder and sobbed.

At the table, there were drawn faces.

“I am going to kill him, I swear to God,” said Matelda, the first one to recover her voice, “I am going to put my hand into his chest and pull out his beating heart. I swear to God, I swear to God, that bastard, that fucking bastard…”

She began to cry too. It was a very emotional moment. O’Rorden who was looking appalled, went over to Vincenzo.

“Shall we take a breather, for five minutes?” he said to him, “give Seamus time to recover?”

“Yes, good idea,” Vincenzo agreed looking very grave. He motioned everyone to get out of the room leaving Seamus and Hughes alone. It would give him a little space to grieve and gather his wits.

After a few more moments, Seamus lifted his tear-stained face to look at Hughes. She smiled.

“Feeling better?” she asked him.

“Yes, thanks,
