Chapter Forty-Seven

Elyon caught Ayla in his arms as she fell to the ground in convulsing spasms so intense he struggled to keep her steady. He dropped to his knees and supported her head and neck with his hands as she continued to shake uncontrollably.

“Ayla, can you hear me? It’s okay. You’re okay.”

His words did nothing. Had this been the first time Elyon fought against dragons with Ayla, he might have panicked, believing something to be horribly amiss. But Elyon and Ayla had fought and slayed Dragon Riders before. He knew what it took to wrench control of a dragon out of the hands of another. He knew the cost of destroying evil.

Romar finished shimmying across the ledge and kneeled down to put his hand on Ayla’s forehead. “She’s clammy,” he said.

“We have to bring her closer,” Elyon said.

“Closer to what?”

“The source.” He knew not what he meant by that, yet still, he knew it to be true. “It’s like when we took Skarria back from Sylvar and Rugar. The closer she is to the adversary, the stronger she becomes. Only then can she break the bond. Where’s Semdris? He can help us push forward.”

“He’s outside,” Romar said. “He didn’t fit.”

Elyon sighed. First Ernome. Then Anku. Then Ayla. Now Semdris. One by one, the leaders of the coalition were falling away, leaving Elyon with more responsibility with each passing minute. He felt the weight on his shoulders, heavy as the very mountain above. His shoulders slumped under the weight of it all.

He wasn’t sure he was made for this, wasn’t sure he was the best man for the job, but what choice did he have? It was him that the people had chosen. It was him who they were going to look to. It was up to him.

Elyon beckoned half a dozen Skarrians to help him with Ayla. He kept a hand on her but let them do the bulk of the work of carrying her, for they were able to keep her head and neck in a safer position as they walked than if Elyon carried her on his own.

Elyon kept a tight grip on his sword, but there were other Skarrians who led the way, so he was less worried about a threat emerging to attack him by surprise. So it was that his full attention was on the mouth of the tunnel as they stepped out onto a great outcropping of rock overlooking the pool of magma below. The room was filled with a metallic stench, not unlike the stench the Hucarian dragons had carried with them to the beaches of Shio Frain when Ayla’s dragon was stolen from her.

Elyon sniffed the air as he looked left and right before a movement above drew his attention. The chamber was enormous in height, taller even than the castle in Yalsera despite the fact that they were in the interior of a volcano. But it wasn’t the height of the chamber that made Elyon’s jaw hang half open. It was the walls.
