Ilene realized she had only thought Edmund was controlled before. Now he was stiffer than a board and absolutely without expression. And he refused to make eye contact. It’s worse than I thought. I’m not sure I can fix this.

“Edmund, before you report, I want to apologize for my behavior earlier. I should have realized that you are entitled to privacy. You would never hide something from me that I needed to know.”

“Your Grace.”

No clue there whether he accepted her apology, which likely meant he did not. Shit.

A deep breath to give her courage to go on. “Tell me, Blake, what our intruder had to say under your truth spell.”

“He is in debt to the Greenville Cartel. They agreed to reduce that debt by one-third if he did this task for them.”

“Is that the same group who held Marcus Winslow’s debt?”

“It is.”

In the past, he would have offered advice about what to do. This version of Edmund was only going to give the bare minimum. Ilene didn't care for this, but she was at a loss as to how to get through if the apology didn't work and the threat to the Duchy didn't work.

“What should we do?”

“Carraway will have some ideas. I can find him.”

“I may check with John later, but I want your ideas. They have always been useful in the past.”

“Better you should consult with someone who is still committed to the Duchy.”

“I trust your judgment, and you wouldn’t do anything to harm either me or the Duchy. And you are brilliant and creative in your thinking. John is a good man, but he’s not in your class.”

“And yet you specifically said you could no longer trust me.” The words came out with a bitterness that was palatable. “I will send Mr. Carraway to you.” With those words, Edmund turned and left.
