Fournier.

They had driven back to the village, with a keen sense of failure. No one at the Château seemed to know why Étienne had been where he was, or why he might have been killed. And no one there seemed to know how Étienne had thought his master had wanted to speak to him that morning.

In the village, everyone was looking for Fournier.

‘Ah, Monsieur Wilson!’ Bricourt stopped them just as the carriage reached the inn. ‘I wondered – would you do another service in this cause? One would not ask, but as your carriage is already on the road …’

‘Where to?’ asked Dr Wilson. He had that look in his eyes, Gil saw, the one he had had when Justine had broken her leg, or when the powder store had exploded. Dr Wilson liked action. ‘Has he been seen?’

‘Someone thinks they saw him this afternoon,’ said Bricourt. ‘We’re not sure, but we think he was heading to St. Omer.’

‘Then let us go,’ said Dr Wilson. ‘Tell the driver,’ he added to Gil.
