23—Kingdom Work

WE DID USE OUR LAST TEN DOLLARS TO HELP A FRIEND OF mine who was not a Christian. To keep me solvent, we had put Ellen’s savings in my account and the balance showed twelve in the bank. I wrote a check for ten, leaving the required two to keep the account open. My old friend, already convinced I was insane, seemed impressed when the next morning’s mail brought the ten dollars back in a letter filled with love from the Greenlees back home. They are relatives who interested me not one bit through the years because they remained Christians and prayed for the Prices. Of course, at my conversion these dear, gentle people and my cousin Pearl, a blond saint, who married a minister, were the first I wanted to see! In spite of the way I had treated all of them, they were happy to see me and opened their arms and I saw that their hearts had never been closed to me as mine had been to them.

The Greenlees taught me the great spiritual lesson of being able to receive when they began sending us ten-dollar checks out of their tithe money!

Neither of us was trained for practical earning. Ellen’s training was advanced, but it was in classical piano. All I could do was write and direct radio scripts. No one seemed to need anything played or written for money. And yet we knew He meant every word He said when He said that we were to seek the Kingdom first and all we needed would be added unto us.

The Lord had walked right up to Ellen in the person of the strange little old man in the New York church almost five years before and told her that we were to depend directly upon His promise. Our part was to seek the Kingdom first.

And we had been doing that.

And one late afternoon when the “duchess’” third janitor in ten days had departed in a rage, an idea hit me! Ellen was out following up a not too likely ad in the paper and I could scarcely wait for her to come home. And when I heard our buzzer vibrating the building with her customary “three shorts,” I was
