The woman at the front desk of Jellicoe House was a beautiful, dark-haired, middle-aged woman with a nametag labeled Mariam S. Angie recognized her, but they hadn’t really spoken before.

After a few moments of polite small talk, Angie inquired if she could ask her a few questions about Lance Mitchell.

“He was demanding, but we’ve had worse. I made sure none of the teenagers who clean rooms for us came anywhere near him. Either I or Mrs. Keene, one of the owners, did his room and handled his calls. Standard procedure.”

“Just checking,” Angie said.

“What are you, a private detective?”

“No, just a busybody who happens to be Mickey and Jo Jerritt’s best friend.”

Mariam’s shoulders relaxed a little. “In that case, I can understand being curious!”

“I own the bookstore in town. Pastries and Page-Turners.”

“Oh!” the woman said. “I’ve been meaning to get out there, but I’m so busy. Is there any chance that you could arrange for us to get some gently used bestsellers out here? Easy beach reads, basically?”

Angie quickly arranged to bring a stack of books over to the B&B on the following day. Mariam said she would see if any of the current guests wanted anything specific.

“Can you tell me,” Angie said after the book business was wrapped up, “what happened on Saturday and Sunday? Who cleaned the room, what time Mr. Mitchell came and left, and whether—I know this is less than professional, but it would clear Mickey and Jo, and that’s all I really care about—anyone, um, stole a cupcake and ate it or anything?”

Mariam laughed. “Well, I was the one who cleaned his room on Saturday. He must have had someone spend the night on Friday because there was makeup smeared on the bathroom mirror,” Angie’s eyes widened. “Anyways, nobody else from staff went into the room. The girls avoided it like the plague, you can be sure, and Mrs. Keene and I didn’t get a call for anything else from him that day.”

“Did anyone eat any cupcakes?” Angie asked hopefully.

“I didn’t. Tempting, but I’m on a low-carb diet.” She tilted her head, staring into space. “Let me think about the guests coming and going...of course you can’t keep an eye on them all the time, like I told Detective Bailey.”

“Of course,” Angie agreed.

“Mr. Mitchell left his room at seven a.m. on Sunday morning. An early riser for someone in the film industry. I started cleaning his room a few minutes after he left, just to be sure that I wouldn’t have to run into him any more than necessary. Everyone else was up by ten a.m., with Miss Julia being the latest riser. Ms. Smith, her assistant, had risen much earlier, about five in the morning, and left for a run along the beach and the trails, returning around six or six-ten. The others came down, had breakfast, and left. I’m assuming you don’t want to know about anyone else staying at the B&B other than the people working on the film?”

“I might later, but not for now.
