“Fool.” War looked at me, a huge grin on his face as the screen in front of me turned into a vortex of garish purple energy that swirled around the battlefield. “You think you know war, but you do not. I was there at the beginning.” He smashed his chest with one hand, causing a resounding clang to ring out across the battlefield despite the fact he was still wearing the blue jumpsuit. “I wasn’t shaped by it or molded by it. I am it, and now you will fall.”

The energy swept out as he finished, hitting the sky high above and spiraling off across the battlefield, and as it did, my screen came to life, displaying, I shit you not, a sort of real-time strategy interface.

“Is this what I think it is?” I asked as War’s fingers began to blur over the keyboard on his own console.

“Yes and no.” War’s triumph was in his words as a bolt of purple energy shot from the sky high above and slammed down on some distant part of the battlefield I couldn’t see. That’s when I noticed the meter at the top of the screen. While mine was still at zero, War’s had increased to one.

“Yes and no?” I asked as I put my hands on the mouse and keyboard, and it was both familiar and strange. Familiar because I’d played a million games before, and my hands settled over the keys like they were a part of me, and strange because I had no fucking clue about how to play.

“You might think of war as a game, and it is… to a point.” He nodded to his screen. “Now play like your life depends on it.”

“Right…” I said, and I moved my mouse across the screen, the arrow swinging over what seemed like a stretch of empty battlefield remarkable similar to the one in front of us. Pausing for a moment, I hit the escape button, hoping to bring up some kind of help menu, and as I did, a message appeared in front of me.

Would you like to quit? Y/N

Sighing, I selected the no, and as I did, another bolt of lightning struck the ground, and War’s counter increased again.

I had no idea if he was scoring points, building units, or harvesting resources, but that was fine. He could have his little head start. He’d need it.

Turning all my focus toward the game console, I reached out with my powers, trying to bring up anything Raphael or Jophiel might have known, and as I did, the ring on my finger pulsed. White light spread over me, and I felt a hand on my shoulder.

I turned my head toward it and found Conquest standing there, only he was more ghost than centaur.

“Let me guess, now that I’ve struck you down, you’ve become more powerful than ever before?” I asked, looking him up and down even though I knew it was wasting valuable seconds.

“No. I’m a fucking ghost now. How could I possibly be stronger?” The centaur shook his head.
