Tables of Hatch Progression and Importance

The following charts rank the most common aquatic insect hatches on a 1 to 5 scale for each of their life stages. A score of 5 means that trout reaction and fishing opportunities are excellent. A 1 score means that the stage is often of little to no importance to the fly fisher.

These rankings are highly subjective and are meant to provide only baseline information. Aquatic insect populations and their densities can vary widely from stream to stream and region to region. The importance of an entire hatch, or even a hatch stage, will also vary from stream to stream. Stream characteristics, like thick weed beds which can make nymphing difficult or impossible, will also determine how important some stages are from one stream to the next.

I have tried to combine a lot of factors into the charts. When I’m comparing two spinnerfalls, one that occurs largely during the day and one that occurs well after dark, I have given a higher rating to the daytime spinnerfall. So even though the two hatches are equally heavy and equally received by trout, I have given a higher rating to the hatch that gives anglers the best opportunity to fish it. Hatch distribution is also a factor. A hatch that is found in fewer rivers and streams, like the East’s Winter Caddis (Dolophilodes distinctus), receives a lower rating than a hatch that is found in nearly every trout stream, like Tan Caddis (Hydropsyche and Symphitopsyche spp. ).
