My poor sunshine.

I watched her stumble through the woods like a lost sparrow with a broken wing, circling the same spot over again as she talked to herself. I couldn’t even find it in me to hurt at her rejection of our closeness or punishing our wolves with moon sickness by spending more time apart.

I kept close so she wouldn’t feel pain, but distant enough to let her tire herself out when it was clear she didn’t have a clue where she was going. My wolf snickered when she’d tied grass to her feet, but I chastised him for laughing.

We’ll fix her somehow. Her wolf is strong. I think it’s only the human side that’s damaged.

The scent of another predator entering our clearly marked territory caught my wolf’s attention. Nose to the ground, he turned away from our mate and hunted the dead cat walking.

Its trail came back and forth between the mountain cliff and the trees. The beast had recognized our territory and decided to be bold anyway. What was the old saying about cats and curiosity? This one’s time had run out.

My wolf came upon the fresh trail with deadly precision. We looked up just as the mountain lion leapt from the boulder.

“Rah!” A screeching war cry came from below.

My wolf growled ferociously as he jumped, landing on a tangle of surprised limbs. Instinctively, he sunk his teeth into the thick hide of the cat’s neck and cracked the spine. Blood filled his mouth. Something heavy smashed against his skull.

Bits of bark flew from his coat as he shook, dazed as the world spun around us. The dead cat fell to the forest floor. Coral screamed and tossed a branch behind her back.

She rushed forward, grabbing his jaw. “Why didn’t you give me some sort of warning?”

My wolf cocked his head to the side as his vision refocused. Did she just hit me?

You and me both, I chuckled, feeling the ache in our head as if it was my own.

My wolf snorted and licked her outstretched fingers. Not broken. She’s strong. Let’s claim her.

“Ew.” Coral jerked her hand away. A long trail of saliva dripped from it. “You got blood all over me.”

My wolf sighed, nudging her leg as the ringing in his ears silenced. Go back to the cave, my love.

She shook her head. “I already told your human that I have somewhere I need to be. But I’d really appreciate it if you came with me.”

My wolf pushed against her again, trying to herd her up the mountain. We felt the torment of her beast before the gold flashed in her eyes.

I watched, waiting to see what her wolf would do. Was she protective like mine? Would she take over to keep her human alive like my wolf had done when I was a pup?

I ached with the need to delve into her mind and discover all the pieces that didn’t quite fit my understanding. There was a battle there between her human side and wolf. It was a strange thing to watch from the outside.
