TENDERNESS

Tenderness can hurt.

Like a bruise that marks the spot of internal bleeding.

When life is tender like a bruise,

we turn inward to protect the wound from further insult.

We bandage, cover up, hide, and shield the soft spot.

Or

tenderness can comfort us.

Like a newborn pressed up against your chest,

skin to skin, heart to heart,

it is the rhythm of the world.

It leaves the mark of eternal life upon your soul.

Or

tenderness can enliven.

Like a desert in bloom after winter rains,

it can

flood the barren terrain.

Water flowing seemingly from nowhere;

a sudden and unexpected rush,

tending to that which is parched,

allowing seed to burst forth in color.

Like the pain of being hurt

and the soft touch of vulnerability,

and the unexpected paradox of a desert flower,

forgiveness is tender.
