Terry had to admit that he couldn’t hear anything wrong. Kelly agreed with him—she wasn’t hearing any more ticking either. Greg and I both listened, and we couldn’t hear anything ticking anymore. The sound had disappeared. Terry suggested we keep driving and stop at another garage if it started happening again. I was a little nervous about this idea, in case the ticking really meant something bad, but I didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to just give up on the trip.

When Terry was gone, Kelly sat back down in her seat.

“Kind of weird how that noise started just outside of Cranston, Connecticut, isn’t it?” said Greg.

“Why is that so weird?” I asked.

“Well, because of Cranston, Connecticut being a shrine to Duchamp. Weird that we would have a hidden noise just as we entered Duchamp’s shrine, isn’t it?”

“You mean because of With Hidden Noise?” I asked.

“Exactly! Here we are driving along on the highway, and just as we enter the land dedicated to ‘Constrain, Connect, Cut,’ we are suddenly hit with hidden noise.”

He emphasized the last three words pointedly.

“Greg,” I asked, “what are you trying to say?”

“Oh!” he said. “Listen! It’s started up again!”

And so it had.

Tick biddle tick tick. Pause.

Tick tick biddle biddle tick tick. Pause. Pause.

Tick tick biddle biddle tick tick biddle biddle.

“You hear that?!” I said to Kelly. “Just like we told you! The engine’s not even on, and there’s that sound again! Should you go and get the mechanic guy?”

Kelly sat where she was, listening for a second.

Tick biddle tick tick. Pause.

“It’s very rhythmic, isn’t it?” she said.

Tick tick biddle biddle tick tick. Pause. Pause.

“It sounds almost too rhythmic. Too perfect. It doesn’t sound like a mechanical sound. It sounds like something electrical.”

Tick tick biddle biddle tick tick biddle biddle.

Greg started laughing.
