Terry had to admit that he couldnât hear anything wrong. Kelly agreed with himâshe wasnât hearing any more ticking either. Greg and I both listened, and we couldnât hear anything ticking anymore. The sound had disappeared. Terry suggested we keep driving and stop at another garage if it started happening again. I was a little nervous about this idea, in case the ticking really meant something bad, but I didnât say anything because I didnât want to just give up on the trip.
When Terry was gone, Kelly sat back down in her seat.
âKind of weird how that noise started just outside of Cranston, Connecticut, isnât it?â said Greg.
âWhy is that so weird?â I asked.
âWell, because of Cranston, Connecticut being a shrine to Duchamp. Weird that we would have a hidden noise just as we entered Duchampâs shrine, isnât it?â
âYou mean because of With Hidden Noise?â I asked.
âExactly! Here we are driving along on the highway, and just as we enter the land dedicated to âConstrain, Connect, Cut,â we are suddenly hit with hidden noise.â
He emphasized the last three words pointedly.
âGreg,â I asked, âwhat are you trying to say?â
âOh!â he said. âListen! Itâs started up again!â
And so it had.
Tick biddle tick tick. Pause.
Tick tick biddle biddle tick tick. Pause. Pause.
Tick tick biddle biddle tick tick biddle biddle.
âYou hear that?!â I said to Kelly. âJust like we told you! The engineâs not even on, and thereâs that sound again! Should you go and get the mechanic guy?â
Kelly sat where she was, listening for a second.
Tick biddle tick tick. Pause.
âItâs very rhythmic, isnât it?â she said.
Tick tick biddle biddle tick tick. Pause. Pause.
âIt sounds almost too rhythmic. Too perfect. It doesnât sound like a mechanical sound. It sounds like something electrical.â
Tick tick biddle biddle tick tick biddle biddle.
Greg started laughing.
