Candelabra and Stanbert sat on top of the wall for just a second, watching the mass of kids rush from the courtyard. In a matter of seconds, it had completely emptied out, leaving only a handful of kids who’d fallen asleep waiting for sundown and whom no one had thought to wake up.

“Where did they all go?” Stanbert asked.

“Forget where they went,” Candelabra said. “Who were they? How are there this many kids here who no one knows about?”

As soon as she said the words out loud, Candelabra pieced it together. She turned to look at Stanbert, who was brushing himself off from his not-totally-perfect landing in the grass. “What?” he asked.

“The gumball machine! The curse!”

He still didn’t get it. So she did what most people do when faced with someone who doesn’t get it. She put her hands on his shoulders, got closer to his face, and said it again, but louder. “The gumball-machine curse, Stanbert! It’s real. It traps kids inside, and that’s them. It must be!”

Stanbert looked over at the entrance to the castle, from which he could hear shouts and glass breaking and all sorts of other loud noises he couldn’t even identify. A bird squawking? A cat hissing? “If that’s them, why would they run away from us? And where’s that Bobert kid?”

Candelabra didn’t want to waste more time. She started moving toward the castle. “I don’t know. But he has to be here, and we’re gonna find him.”
