# # # Chapter 6.5: Wargames

Second Lieutenant Julianna “Jules” Veilchenschläger's footsteps echoed on the hard-packed dirt path. She was of average height, pretty in a hardened sort of way, with her blonde hair tied back in a ponytail.

She enjoyed the early morning dark. Cold and solitary were exactly how she liked her runs. Freeing.

To her left, a lake’s black water softly reflected the sky’s sparse light. The pathway ahead snaked its way around the silent water, interspersed with trees and brush.

She increased her tempo with the high of music in her headphones. This was her favourite part. Her jog morphed into a sprint. She gasped for air after two minutes and slowed to her normal speed. In her ears, the music pounded on, demanding of her, working her harder.

She came around the lake not an hour later. As she reached the guard house, she took a moment, her hands on her knees, panting, steadying herself. She walked to the gate and smiled broadly at the guard.

God, she had needed this. Her head wasn’t quite there yet, but this was a start. The sergeant was out of his mind. Mobilising while most of the company was on leave was fun, but for what? This was a legitimate fuckin’ operation. As far as the intel went, people could get shot. This wasn’t a training exercise; it was a mission. With civilians on board, no less.

Then again, her men could use the action. Most had been bitching and moaning for months now, ever since their last deployment had been cancelled. Certain men and women seemed to itch for it rather than shy away. Only a certain kind of person considered joining the service, especially since it wasn't mandatory now. The cavalry scouts attracted a different breed again.

Jules knew she was the same, felt it gnawing at the back of her mind. The itch. She made her way to the showers, where she had already stashed a fresh uniform.

It was certainly unorthodox, but the sergeant had been very clear about the private and unsanctioned nature of their quest. This hadn't stopped a soul from joining him. He was a well-liked man in the company, as any supply sergeant worth his salt should be.

Still, to risk your life for something... it wasn't a decision one made lightly. They had all made it the day they were sworn in together. They all lived by it or at least tried. If this was to work, it could be no different.

She would lead her men into the fight, should one ensue, though she hoped not. A little light recon action, though, setting up the game for someone else, that was a scout's true purpose in life. Sure, they could give the enemy hell, but a cavalry scout’s mantra was quite different: “Tarnen, täuschen, verpissen!” Camouflage, fool and retreat.

Words that had guided the company through Afghanistan, Kosovo and the bloody bits of Africa. They would guide them through this, too, with her helping hand ensuring everyone came back.
