Chapter Seventeen

In the morning, I stand on the stairs, my heart in my throat. The black, shimmering frost has spread overnight. It coats the climbing hydrangea, the wisteria, and the jasmine on the front counter in fuzzy-looking crystals. The walls are covered in it, so thick I can’t see the paper underneath. And the door, it’s almost disappeared completely beneath a layer of ice.

“Rhyme?” I call out, my breath a visible cloud in the air. A single firefly glows in front of me. It zooms off between the fiction stacks and I hurry after it. Bursting into the shop, I nearly knock James over. He stands, staring at the quote on the chalkboard. A single sentence scrawled across it, angling down the slate.
