Ali Baba climbed from the tree and crept over to the mysterious rock. He didn’t know if the head thief was a magician or if the rock was charmed. There was only one way to find out. “Open, Sesame!” said Ali Baba. To his delight, the rock obeyed Ali Baba’s command.

The robbers’ lair amazed Ali Baba. There were huge piles of gold and silver coins and many brightly colored silks. There were carpets and chests full of jewels. Ali Baba had never seen such treasures. He loaded as much as he could onto his mules, then commanded the rock, “Shut, Sesame!” When he arrived home he and his wife immediately buried the treasure.

Ali Baba returned to the cave many times, taking small portions of the stolen riches, so the thieves wouldn’t notice. Soon he had a fortune and began to live like a rich man, buying new land and new clothes.

Finally the robbers noticed how much treasure was missing and started looking for the culprit. Their leader disguised himself as a traveling oil merchant and went into the city to ask if anyone nearby had suddenly become rich. The tailor told him that Ali Baba, who had been poor for so long, had been buying many fine suits. He directed the thief to Ali Baba’s fine new home. Later that night, the thief visited Ali Baba and asked for shelter for the night. Ali Baba agreed, not recognizing him. The leader placed large jars in Ali Baba’s barn and ordered his men to hide in them with their weapons.

That night, Ali Baba’s servant, Akilah, noticed that they’d run out of oil for the house lamps. She went to the barn to get more oil and spied the men waiting to ambush the house. Luckily for Ali Baba, Akilah was true to her name (akilah means “intelligent” in Arabic). She crept into the house, boiled a big pot of oil, and carried it to the barn. She poured oil into each jar. Smarting from the hot oil, the men dropped their weapons and fled. Their leader fled with his band too, never to be heard from again.
