“Simone and I had a big fight yesterday. I think we might break up—if we haven’t already.”

Raybury asked if I wanted to break up.

“If she had an open mind then maybe not…. I’ve always been open to trying new things, experimentation, you know. As it stands now, I don’t know if we’re the perfect match. She’s hot, but she’s probably not my, you know, Perfect. I just don’t see how we can be together if she’s not willing to try this out with me.”

Raybury leaned forward. “Dude,” he said, “if this world were perfect, if women were perfect, couples would stay together. Families would stay together.”

“But that’s not the world we live in,” Brannigan said. “Invincible Father knows this world. He understands right now the struggles men face when dealing with women and anybody else who’s different or doesn’t agree. That’s why right now we’re not fully Manifested—what we call ‘Max Manifested.’”

“That’s when you make it on The List,” I said.

“That’s right. The List. The Manifest.”

Raybury cleared his throat. “We’re told perfection doesn’t exist, that there’s no perfect guy. We don’t buy that. Perfection does exist. Men can be perfect. Just look at Invincible Father. He used to be on earth, in this world, one of us, trying like us to be perfect. Through His complete and Invincible Faith, and His strength and attitude, He succeeded. He no longer fails. He doesn’t experience breakups. He doesn’t go through divorces. His women never leave Him. Anything His family wants, He gives them.”

“And He gets anything He wants from them,” Brannigan said. “Anything.”

“That’s great,” I said. “But…doesn’t that happen only in the afterlife? Not this world?”

“It can happen in this world. It should happen in this world.”

“It will happen in this world.” Brannigan offered up the Book of the Manifested. “It’s all here,” he said. “How this world will be.”

“Only a man and a woman can be married,” I said, my eyes locked with theirs. “An actual man and an actual woman.”

“That’s correct, Stan. Women were made for men, after all.”

“The young Manifested man searches for his Perfect, and once he finds her he works on her until she’s convinced to join.”

“Also correct.”

“But during that time sex is withheld.”

“Not necessarily,” Brannigan said. “Sex is very important to the Manifested way. We don’t say no to sex before marriage, but the man must be in control. He must be the one to call the shots. It’s his choice, not hers.”

“And it better be with the right chick,” said Raybury.

“It’s very important, Stan,” Brannigan said, “that as a man you know you have a much greater burden than your Perfect. That’s how it is in this world. Men have it worse, they just do. Women can fail—they’re allowed to fail, they’re expected to fail, they will continue to fail—but men must be perfect in this world, so they can achieve Invincibility in the next.”

I told the missionaries I had never been clear on what happened after death. Brannigan and Raybury explained that in the
