Chapter 23
Easton
âWhat is this place?â E whispered as she slid to the ground, walking around Hookâs form to take in the surroundings. The air held a sense of something almost sacred.
E had never gone to church. Sheâd never had the opportunity, or the peace of soul to dare trying. But standing in this small grassy area, deep within the heart of Sanctuary, E felt what she could only imagine such a special place to feel like. Guards had stood at the entrance of the heavily gated area, dangerous eyes watching her every move. That alone had been enough to warn her of the special nature of the area they were entering. The feeling in the air was reinforcement of the matter.
Ian walked up behind her, mouth near her ear, chest pressing to her back, hand gently cupping her waist. When he spoke, his gruff voice was just as quiet as hers.
âThis is Neverlandâs greatest secret, little butterfly. A secret I am sharing with you. If ever there was a doubt in your heart about my dedication, and my faith in you, I pray this puts it to rest.â Straightening, but not relinquishing his gentle touch, Ian released a long sequence of whistles into the air. Arms wrapping about her midsection, he held her tightly and waited.
âTry not to make any sudden movements. They startle easily, and will release painfully high-pitched screams at a momentâs notice.â E froze in place at Hookâs cautionary tone, eyes scanning the horizon for the coming threat. The sounds of happy cheers met their ears moments before the little bodies appeared in the distance. Tiny arms waved in greeting as the bodies jumped up and down with excitement.
âAre those⦠children?â E gasped.
Hook released a long pent-up chuckle, clearly enjoying the false suspense heâd just instilled in her. Easton elbowed him, hard. Which of course only made Hook laugh harder. She increased her efforts to poke holes in him with her elbow, the only appendage she could move in her currently bear-hugged position.
âYou big jerk, you had me ready for a fight!â
âHey! My warnings were perfectly honest! Those little devils have nearly burst an eardrum or two over the years!â Finally, offering surrender, Ian grabbed her hand and pulled her forward. E watched the children in wonder as they drew closer.
âI havenât seen a single child since I arrived. What are they all doing here?â
âRemember, the Pan steals children away to become his sustenance, dear one.â E blushed, enjoying the progression of Ianâs endearments since their impromptu marriage. He had always called her little butterfly, etc. But as their friendship grew, so did the inflection behind those little harmless phrases.
âThese are the last of the children in all of Neverland. They are the ones we fight to make a new world for, they are the greatest treasures we have to offer that world one day.â He pressed a light kiss to the tip of her nose. E swallowed hard at the tenderness in his gaze when he pulled away.
